My Great-Great-Grandparents on my Mothers side left Ireland during the Potato Famine.
The four of them came first to New York where they met and married, both sets ended up in Blaine, KS. The Teahan’s raised cattle and the Fagan’s farmed the land.
My Great-Grandparents met and got married, they had two sons and one daughter who was my Grandmother.
When I visit Blaine I am reminded of the hardship they experienced going from the lush green climate of Ireland to the prairie of Kansas when it was a wilderness and dangerous to travel to.
They built a life that the could not have had in Ireland through prayer, sweat and tears.
I would not be here today if one of them had not made the long trip at sea or moved across the country in the 1860’s ,
Both Great-Great-Grandfathers helped build the Catholic Church that stands in Blaine, Ks. today.
My ancestors story is pretty common on those who left their native land for a chance at a life they could not have had if they stayed.
My latest painting is called “Hope and Dreams” it was a time for strong character and backbone for the early settlers of the Prairie.
